Join us for the STEAM Café this month! August’s STEAM talk, “Smelter Hill: Indigenous Materials for Research, STEM Education, and Sustenance”, will be presented by Dr. Jon Kellar, professor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at South Dakota Mines.

The “Smelter Hill” area above O'Harra Stadium processed gold during the university’s early days, making it a rich area for research and historical understanding. Dr. Jon Kellar, professor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at South Dakota Mines, will discuss how teams of students and community members recently used Smelter Hill for ceramic fabrication and processing, identification of micrometeorites, and utilization of its of unique flora and fauna.
